We could not be more excited to feature our growing team of Speech-Language Pathologist Assistants (SLPAs) at Sunny Spot Speech and Language Therapy Inc.! Our state licensed SLPAs help us to provide even more in-home pediatric speech therapy services for our diverse and expanding clientele throughout Los Angeles.
You may be wondering, what is a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA)? According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association: SLPA’s are licensed healthcare professionals who work under the supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) and assist SLPs in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of speech, language, and communication disorders. SLPA's play a vital role in providing speech and language therapy services by helping patients with exercises and drills to improve their speech, language and communication skills to achieve their maximum potential.
We’ve asked Maria Ramos (“Ms. Maria”), one of our incredible bilingual Spanish and English speaking SLPAs, some questions that families (and more importantly, children) may have, as they are getting to know (and love) Ms. Maria:

Ms. Maria Ramos – Sunny Spot Speech SLPA - Q&A
The questions below were asked by our Sunny Spot Speech team – but are common questions asked by caregivers and families before their child begins in-home speech therapy sessions:
Q: What languages do you speak?
I speak English and Spanish languages. I also know some American Sign Language (ASL).
Q: How many years have you worked with children?
I have worked with children for 15 years. I’ve been specifically working with children with special needs for the past 8 years. I have previously worked as a special education assistant and behavior interventionist.
Q: What made you decide to become a SLPA?
My daughter had a speech and language delay and didn’t speak until she was four years old. I first became interested in the field when she began receiving speech therapy services. I also wanted to help children, such as my daughter, communicate their wants and needs when I saw first-hand how effective and essential early intervention speech therapy services are.
Q: Are there any specific area(s) of speech therapy that you love?
I really enjoy early intervention and articulation therapy.
Q: Favorite hobbies/past-times?
I love running and thrift shopping.
Q: Favorite speech therapy activities for younger children?
I enjoy helping families create language routines at home, like the ‘sleeping game’. I also love incorporating sensory activities into my therapy sessions. I enjoy playing with bubbles and ‘peek a boo’ with infants and toddlers.
Q: Favorite speech therapy activity for older children?
I love working on a child’s speech and language goal while playing a simple card game, like “Go Fish.”
Q: What is your favorite children’s book?
The Giving Tree.
Q: What do you like best about working with Sunny Spot Speech and Language Therapy Inc.?
I enjoy having the freedom to work around my schedule. I also enjoy the communication I have with my Speech Language Pathologist supervisor.
Q: Can you briefly describe (in one sentence) what one of your speech therapy sessions looks like?
My therapy sessions are focused on following the child’s lead and interests, while also including movement activities and songs.
